Rotary International District 3240 lies in the North Eastern part of the Indian subcontinent between Nepal, China, Bhutan, Myanmar and Bangladesh. To the north it is bordered by the mighty Himalayas and on the southern end is the Bay of Bengal. Territorially, this District is one of the largest Rotary districts in the world covering over 1 million eight hundred thousand sq.kms. Of land. Closeted within these perimeters is a land of now clad mountains, verdant hills, expansive plains, mountain streams, majestic rivers, busting towns, idyllic hamlets and miles and miles of land carpeted by lush green tea bushes. In fact, we can refer to district 3240 as the tea bowl of the world. Significantly, the three most distinctive flavors the delicate muscatel Darjeeling tea, the robust Dooars tea and the rich liquored Assam variety are all produced from this region.
District 3240 is a relatively new district and encompasses nine states of India Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, Tripura and West-Bengal. There are 48 clubs in the district with almost 1800 Rotarians. In tune with the districts staggering topographical variations is its cultural diversity- the result of the co-existence of a number of ethnic groups, religions, languages, races and culture. The District has some of the most beautiful sites to offer to visitors. The majestic mountain ranges, hill-stations par excellence in Darjeeling, Shillong, Gangtok, Kalimpong, Aizwal, Imphal etc. The wildlife sanctuaries of Kaziranga, Manas, Jaldapara, Orang and Pabhoi, all combine to make a district a fascinating region.
Besides tea, the economy of the District is hinged on the industrial Belt of Durgapur, Asansol, the coal fields of Raniganj, Petroleum producing region of Assam, Orange and cardamom groves of Mirik and exotic orchids and horticulture products of Sikkim and Kalimpong.But the singularly greatest attraction of the District lies in its Traditionally warm hospitability of fact one must actually experienced to believe. R.I.Dist: 3240 is the melting pot of many diverse ethnic and cultural groups and possibly surpasses the rest of the country in its scenic beauty, natural flora and fauna. The great festivals are Durga Puja, Bihu in Assam, Paush Mela in Santiniketan, Christmas in the Hill States of North-East apart from various other local festivals. The uniqueness of the District lies in its bond of Rotarians, Rotractors, Interactors and members of Rotary Family.Must club are small but vibrant with its committed and dedicated members.
